Relocating to Southern Cali for 18 months

I have a Sig P225 and a Ruger Mini 14 I want to take with me. Can I?

    Yes, so long as the Sig 225 pistol doesn't have a threaded barrel and so long as the Mini is in standard configuration - no folding stock with pistol grip, no flash hider.

    You can not bring greater than 10 round magazines into the state with you unless you lived here previously and owned them legally. Hi caps in CA are perfectly legal to own, but can not be brought into the state "new".

    The Mini 14 is fine as long as you don't have a folding stock or a flash hider on the rifle and remember the 10 round magazine capacity limit. The P-225 is fine for CA but since an 18 month relocation will make you a CA resident you'll have to fill out a form available at any police or sheriffs office to register it with the CA DOJ. There is a fee for this, but I cannot recall the exact amount ($25???). It is all straight forward stuff and you should ahve no problems at all.

    Anything that is a flash hider is a no-no and a barrel that is threaded to accept a flash hider is also banned unless it was threaded and a muzzle break permanently attached to it. If you have a flash hider or a muzzle device that can be removed and exposes a threaded barrel you are have a banned feature.

    Mark - just to clarify, you are speaking of threaded barrels on semi auto handguns only, correct? Threaded barrels on rifles are not an issue, brakes do not need to be welded on so long as the rifle barrel is otherwise + 16" long. A muzzle brake threaded on to a rifle barrel is legal in CA.

    A compensator or a brake on a rifle are fine. A flash suppressor on a semi auto rifle with a detachable magazine (such as the Mini) is not legal.

    CA law defines a flash suppressor as a device that has the capabilty of diverting the muzzle flash away from the shooter's field of view. While that may seem very broad and applicable to nearly any device, an item advertised as a brake that used small ports or that has an opening about the same size as the bullet diameter is considered legal in CA - see the attached page for Brownells for some examples:

    Note the items described as a brake or comp have a small exit hole even though they may otherwise resemble an A2 hider.

    One thing to be careful of - note the Carlson "compensator". I would consider this a FH and not legal. I bought the JO A2 type and use it on my Mini - new stainless barrel was threaded by Accuracy Systems.

    You may also want to check out the difference between the Springfield M1A standard edition with an FH and the CA legal version with a brake, it illustrates the difference.

    Having said all that, if you have anything screwed on to your barrel could someone give you a hard time during a traffic stop? Certainly and the safest choice I suppose is to have nothing on the muzzle.

    Heck - $19.00 is cheap here, considering the alternative (if the gun's OK in CA)is to transfer through an FFL. Those go anywhere from about $60.00 to almost $150.00. How would you like to buy a gun for $250.00 or so then pay another $100.00 or so for transfer - and that doesn't include shipping. [:(]

    Not sure on this one - does the "new resident" need to have an HSC card when he does the self register bit?
