Colt New Service ?

Did the Colt New Service back strap marked US Army model 1917, and the barrel patent date of oct 5, 1926 come with a 7 1/2" barrel in 45 Colt. Serial #74,XXX. I guess the question is did the commercial models come marked US Army or was this a put together gun.

  IMHO it would have to been rebarreled. All the 1917's I've seen had the standard shorter barrel length and were chambered for the .45 ACP.
  
  Edit: 74,XXX was Model 1917 made in June 1918, according to my reference.

  I don't see how a true military Colt 1917 could be marked with a 1926 patent date - maybe I'm missing something though?
  
  I believe there were "put together" 1917 revolvers using left over 1917 parts, can't recall if Smith or Colt (or both) did that though. Just a guess, but putting a longer barrel on a 1917 would have been pretty easy, that would be my guess. You can check the "Proofhouse" web site for Colts by serial number. If yours comes back as military I would think it's just been rebarreled.
