AK-47 7.62x39mm Rate of twist

I saw a very interesting thread about the proper rate of twist for a 5.45x39mm AK-74 barrel in General Discussion. They said that some of the CAI Polish Tantals were built with USA barrels with an improper rate of twist (1:7), which would cause military surplus ammo to tumble in flight after traveling +/- 300 yards. CAI said that if you shot Wolf ammo that would eliminate the problem with the 1:7 barrels. They said 1:9 was a better rate of twist for those guns. What is the best rate of twist for an AK-47? Do any of you guys know?

    I'd love to know what rate of twist most US AK-47 barrels is. Another thing I've been wondering is why some US made gas pistons have extra "notches" on the piston head than the two on my Romanian gas piston. All this makes me wonder, are US made parts designed to be sub standard on purpose? I don't know. Any insight on these things would be much appreciated.

    On purpose or otherwise many American made guns are indeed substandard, even more expensive semiautos.. cheap barrel steel, chrome lineing, reciever/bolt material on and on.

    It is very easy to tell the twist rate of any firearm with a tight patched cleaning ron and a ruler. Not hard to figure out at all.

    Run a tight patch cleaning jag or loop into the boreon a cleaning rod. Mark the rod with a piece of tape, and then measure the amount of inches it takes to get that piece of tape to turn one full revolution. The distance the tape travels lengthwise on the ruler, will be the "x", in the saying one turn in "x" inches.

    Thanks tsr1965. I'm gonna remember that trick. When I get a chance I'll post my WASR 10/63 rate of twist.
