Expert Opinions on my Final Deer Rifle
Hi All,
I am 54 and am looking to purchase my last deer rifle. I recently inherited a farm in northeast Pa. and have decided the 7mm 08 is what I will reload for my new rifle, already have a Savage for my wife in that caliber. Love the punch and light recoil of the round, perfect for our whitetails.
Any way, I grew up on bolt actions and have narrowed my choice to either the Savage 14 Classic or the Remington 700 CDL. As far as I can tell they are both fine rifles. Does anyone have thoughts about one being superior in one way over the other? I know they'll both shoot as well as I need them to. The Remington looks more pleasing but not sure how their quality is nowadays. I know the Savage piece, got a Classic 114 for my son in 3006, it's a nice rifle.

You really cant go wrong either way. I have both and each have thier great features. The Remington is better looking. 0 -
If this really will be your last I'd say go custom or at least "top shelf production". Check out this Cooper 54 in 7-08. (no affiliation, etc w/ auction)

Don't overlook the Remington Model Seven CDL. I just got one and am very impressed with the appearance and light weight. 0 -
I like the older 700s,but Remingtons quality has really gone down the crapper in the last few years.I like Savage,not pretty but they do what they were made to do. 0 -
Excellent choice of caliber. You cannot go wrong either way, however, you are way too young to be calling it your last deer rifle. [:p]

I've got you by 10 and I am not sure I have purchased my last or even next to last. There are a lotta deer out there, and that is going to take a lot of rifles. Buy 'em both. 0 -

The answer is that whichever one YOU like better is the better one.
Really, they're both great, and there is nothing more to it than that.
Don't second guess yourself. If you don't have a preference, then it really doesn't matter.0 -
