First Colt Python

A good friend of mine turned me on the this 1968 - 4" SS, diamond in the rough;\ As you will notice, this gun has seen better days. I recently sent it to Colt for refinishing. I'll post After pics once it's done.

The gun came with the Pachmayr grips but, I would like to find the original style wood grips issued for that year. Would it be the same style as new gun ?

    Does SS stand for Stainless Steel? If so, I wasn't aware Pythons were in stainless in 1968. More likely nickel.

    Just so you don't get locked out after 10 posts. The two most distinguishing features of the Python were the internals and the finish. As long as no one tried to improve the functioning, your Python should serve you, and whomever you decide to pass it on to, very well.

    That's what the seller said. Is there a special mark on the gun to confirm or deny it ? Check these pics out !

    It's been refinished. See how the screw hole in this pic is dished out by some rather heavy buffing.

    Colt did not offer stainless steel on it's handguns until the early 1980's.

    Python grips have changed. Yours came with grip like this:

    You should be able to find a set for < $200.

    Gentlemen,

    I got off the phone with Colt a little while ago. They confirmed it's not stainless but some type of nickel finish and that stainless was not offered until 1982. (Good call rsnyder55 and JohnnyBgood)

    The tech said he was going to check the archives to determine the exact finish and the date in which it was released.

    Either way, I still feel I got a good deal and once refinished, it'll be with me a long time and eventually passed on to my kids.

    I'll keep you all posted.

    Agree on the grips, the version you listed in auction(s)shows the top of the checkering following the contour of the Colt medallion which I believe is correct up until about '74 and should be on a '68 version - later version as shown on the nickeled Python in auction shows the top of checkering pattern in a straight line.

    Both expensive as hell though, I wonder how many pairs were replaced with aftermarket or just lost years back.

    So far as refinish on this gun goes, I think I'd be tempted by hard chrome.
