    Hello Mike,

    I do not believe that the butt stock has been shortened, but a picture of the end of the stock with the butt plate removed should tell us the true story.

    The front sight is a non-factory replacement, and the receiver has several signs that it has been lightly polished and reblued (a long time ago). The butt stock does appear to have been refinished.

    Thanks Bert, what makes you think it is a reblue?. I'm good at spotting this and ALL lines/corners/flats/lettering are sharp edged.
    I'll post pix's tommorow of the butt stock. I installed a set screw for the trigger and that seams to work now (1x72 screw size fwtw). The front sight is obvious but the rifle overall looks unmolested.

    Hello Mike,

    Compare the Winchester Definitive Proof mark on the barrel to the one on the frame ring... the one on the frame ring is significantly fainter, and it has 100% bluing coverage. Note that the proof mark on the barrel is quite some bit sharper, and the bluing is not 100%. The second thing that I noted is that the roll marking on the upper tang has soft edges... they should be sharper.

    The butt stock has definitely been messed with (not Winchester original work).

    Can you post a new picture of the proof mark stamp on the frame ring? The roll stamp on the upper tang actually looks like it is original finish.

    OK, I was correct... the receiver has been refinished. Note the distinct difference in the proof mark stamp on the barrel versus the frame ring. The marking on the barrel is exactly as it should be... the marking on the frame ring should be nearly identical, and it is not.

    Thanks Bert, any chance this was a factory refinish (to repair a botched original blueing??) like I said all the flats and corners look very sharp/flat. I'm just trying to help out a customer.

    The Cody factory letter doers not mention an "R & R", therefore, it is unlikely that it was reblued by the factory.

    The proofmark on the frame ring is washed out (thin, with faint edges), and it has no discoloration around the edges (like the one on the barrel). Keep in mind that the proof mark was struck after the barrel and receiver were blued.
