Savage 99 303 rebarrel
I have a Savage 99 currently with a sworn out 303 barrel on it and would like to rebarrel it. What calibers can I easily have this rebarreled in? I know because of the rotary mag this can sometimes cause problems so what is the easiest option (if any) where the only change would be the barrel? There is a 25/35 barrel on here now that I am looking at. Would that caliber work?

I would cycle some 30-30's through the action to see how they function. Do you have a 30-30? A friend with one? A friendly sporting goods store that would let you borrow a few? Myself? I would love to have a 99 in 38-55. Just dreamin' btw 25-35's are cool, I have one.[;)] Eddie 0 -
Yep I have a few 30-30 rounds laying about for my Savage 170. I will give it a whirl. Still pondering that barrel though... 0 -
Ok so I think I may have answered my own ?? a little here. I tried the 30-30 and it cylce fine in my takedown, I removed the barrel to make sure there were no accidents. I checked the dimensions of the 20-35 and they are very near the 303 and the 30-30 so I think I would be in good shape there. Now just got to get the barrel. 0 -
Any of the Savage calibers would work fine, correct? Personally I'd go with the 250/3000, just have a thing for 25 calibers. 0 -
"Personally I'd go with the 250/3000".........nope, you have to stay with the .30/30 family (.219 zipper,.25/35, .30/30, .32 special) 0 -
Yeah that is what I thought because of the cartridge measurements the 250-3000 wouldn't work. I am going to try my best to do a 25/35. I'll keep everyone posted. 0 -

OK, since I own one I gotta learn something today .....
Why won't another caliber of the Savage class of cartridges work if he's "rebarreling" (which I take to mean replacing) from 303 Savage to another Savage cartridge? Is the spool different. My 99 is a 300, I'm assuming the only difference is neck size?
I can't argue with 25/35 as a choice though, I have a T/C barrel in that caliber and it's absolutely a jewel to shoot - accurate as heck and pleasant.0 -
It's a rim/case head thing. 219,25/35,303 Savage,30-30 etc,all are rimmed cases. 250-3000, 300 savage are rimless. 0 -
^^^
Thanks, thought that might be the case after considering - didn't know the 303 was rimmed.0 -
Well I won the 25/35 barrel that was up on here so that is the winner. Will post something on here about the results of this little project later. 0
