    Kasenit compound from Brownells. Or anneal at about 1600 degrees, cool in sand, reheat to 750, quench in motor oil. Or find a machinist with a heat treat oven.

    just the opposite from what 11b said, heat to bright red heat, quench in oil or water, polish the part bright then SLOWLY heat until the part turns purple (about 400/500 deg.) then requench in oil. kasenit is for low carbon steels.

    If the part cracks in water quenching and you have to remake the part, use the less severe oil quench.
    Water quench is severe but if you need to use it, saturate the water solution with salt to reduce boiling and steam at the interface which
    affects heat transfer.

    For hardening, the few times I have had to use it I treated it like high carbon steel: heat red, oil quench, and spring temper by putting in a little tray of oil and burn off. Seemed to work.

    I have made scores of carbon steel springs that way from known 1095, old carpenter saw blades, kitchen knives, files, etc.
