Has anything new come along in belt fed ar uppers?

why arent there all kinds, the Ar-10 was made into a belt fed 50 years ago, it seems like it would be an easy thing to do, simply drawing from the original ar-10 concept.

Who cares if its a novelty item? It would be a cool novelty item that sells, and I bet it would find a place in high volume matches if it is more reliable system then the beta drum.. Ares defense isnt shipping the shrike. And the fact that an upper feeds from a belt instead of a box or drum mag doesnt make a machine gun.
As an aside, It seems to me, That the military could gain greatly from haveing an upper that would turn a M4 into a reliable LMG.

Why aren't there all kinds?
Well, for one, I have to question the real world utility of this thing. OK, as a novelty, I get it, but is there really much advantage to be had in turning an AR-15 into a machine gun? If you just want high-cap, 100 round AR-15 mags are readily available and will take unlinked rounds.
By the way, if you like belt-feds, I think this is sort of cool (though it might be a hoax for all I know):

That is so bogus !!! belt feed a 1911....with no big machining cuts on the slide...yea sure !!!0
