    As long as we're placing bets, I'd expect lower groups with similar bullet weight at higher velocity. Only one way to find out for sure![:D][:D]

    If the revolver were locked in a machine rest that didn't allow any recoil induced movement, then your logic would hold. I know little about machine rests, but I do recall that years ago (many[:D]) when I had access to a Ransom rest, I could adjust the amount of tension holding the gun and after each shot the gun would have to be lowered back down to a predetermined starting point.
    So, whether hand held, or in a Ransom rest, the explanation of recoil and barrel time is correct. Just like with sight adjustments, it doesn't take much "on the gun" the make a big difference at relatively short range. Gruntled has it right on this one.

    I agree with RCrosby,

    Higher velocity from a revolver will make it shoot lower with the same bullet weight.

    It will shoot lower, BECAUSE IT GETS OUT OF THE BARREL FASTER. And the recoil has not hit the gun yet !! You might still have to adjust the sight to the 357 though.

    Dan Wesson Models are typically not marked but the Model 15's had a front sight that could be changed to higher or lower and Dan Wesson made different front sight heights. There should be an allen head screw in the front that can be unscrewed with one of the allen wrenches in the barrel tool.

    The Dan Wesson Model 14 was a fixed sight model, however. You don't say which model you have. The barrel on the Model 14 does not have a way to remove the front sight, nor does it have adjustable rear sights.

    And, the Dan Wesson Model 14 barrel shroud (with a lower, fixed front sight) will fit on the Dan Wesson Model 15 with the adjustable rear sight. If your gun is a Model 15 with a model 14 barrel shroud, it's gonna shoot high regardless of which caliber you shoot.

    I don't see how a FASTER round will strike a target LOWER than a slower round given the same launch angle (ie sight setting).

    Given two otherwise identical rounds, launched at the exact same angle (ie same sight setting) the SLOWER one will drop further over a given distance than a faster one. That means it will hit the target lower. The faster round will strike higher.

    I think what's confusing this is that if the two guns are properly zeroed, THEN the faster round will have the flatter trajectory and it won't rise as high. In THAT case the .357 will hit lower than the .38. But that is NOT what we are talking about here!

    If it clarifies this, imagine the gun locked in a machine rest, with three similar bullet-loads at 500, 1000, and 1500 feet per second fired in succession at a target 25 yards away. .

    No brainer. The slow 500fps bullet will hit the target lowest, then the 1000fps one in the middle, and the fastest 1500 fps round will hit highest. Note that this will be true over ANY distance, with the spread of bullets growing further apart, the longer the distance to the target.

    As a relevant second point, and in this case a far more important one, the difference in point of impact between any .38 and a .357 at only 13 yards is going to be minimal, probably just a fraction of an inch.

    4" high at only 40 feet is a BIG difference, and I don't think its correctable with ANY ammunition (well, not any ammo that you'd probably actually want to shoot).

    You're going to need to adjust your sights here, either lower your rear or raise your front.

    The faster round often hits lower because it is in the barrel a shorter time. There is therefore less time for the recoil to raise the barrel.
    Length of barrel and amount of recoil can both have effects as well but I have found that for handguns you can often lower the point of impact by increasing the velosity of the bullet.

    gruntled, I think you are correct. I will try some 357's befor I change the front sight. Also, I agree that the shooter is always a factor. This gun shoots better than I do. If I hold from a rest it will hold a tight group. The group is just a little high.

    The higher velocity bullet has less dwell time in the barrel during flight. The recoil forces with the faster bullet have not had as much effect on the shooter's hand, so it will strike lower.

    My experience has always been that a faster, lighter bullet fired from a handgun hits lower than a heavier, slower bullet of the same caliber fired from the same gun. Some a little, some alot. This is especially a pain (just in my experience)to deal with when using a fixed sight 357 Magnum. I had a Colt SAA that had quite a different point of impact.

    Regarding the DW, I would say use a similar weight bullet and take advantage of the inteerchangeable front sight set up to minimize the difference.
