WOODSMAN 10" BARREL
I recently purchased a new in the wrap, 10" barrel for a Colt Woodsman. The only reference I have found is on the old Woodsman Carbine model. Anyone have any info? Al

If none of our folks can help you, check Bob Raeburn's Woodsman site, ( GOOGLE, Colt Woodsman ). It's a large site and very comprehensive as far as Woodsman are concerned. I just took a quick look over there and couldn't find any reference to Woodsman with 10" barrels. 0 -
Interesting I never heard of any 10 inch . Does it have any markings on the barrel . We would love to see pictures.
EDITWow a great piece I agree the Barrel Shank is entirely too long but This adds to the mystery The threaded part also looks much longer then I remember the threads on this model woodsman . Can you tell if your barrel is Chambered. or does the rifling run from one end of the barrel "MUZZLE" to the other end "SHANK" . If it is chambered then it is in my opinion FINISHED but would fit a MUCH different receiver . Thanks for sharing Perry Shooter.0 -

The article I saw was this one-- www.colt22.com/expstock ...The barrel is a round pencil one. Marked as follows "Colt's PT.F.A.MFG.CO.HARTFORD,CT.USA" The second line reads "PATENTED JULY 4, 1905. OCT. 5,1926." On the side "CAL.22 LONG RIFLE". I don't know how to post pics here, but if you email me I can do it thru email. Thanks- Al 0 -

"This Woodsman, formerly in the Robert Q. Sutherland collection and illustrated in The Book of Colt Firearms by Sutherland and Wilson, is one of only two known factory shoulder stocked Woodsmans. This one is unblued, "in the white." The other one is fully blued and finished, and is part of the Colt Collection in the Connecticut State Museum.
Due to the fact that it has a shoulder stock, like a rifle, along with a barrel less than 20 inches long, it meets the legal definition of a "short rifle" according the the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (BATF). It has, however, been reclassified by the BATF as a "Curio and Relic." According to the BATF, concerning this Woodsman and three other guns formerly in the Sutherland collection:
"Since all four of the stocked handguns currently registered to you are experimental prototypes, we find that, by reason of their rarity and date of manufacture, they are primarily collector's items and are not likely to be used as weapons. They are, therefore, excluded from the definition of a firearm under 26 U.S.C., Section 5845(a) and are exempted from the provisions of the amended National Firearms Act."
Since this experimental gun has no serial number, it was assigned an identification number by the BATF. The BATF identification medallion is the round device attached to the trigger guard."0 -

Some came out a bit blurry but the barrel is mint. It looks like it has never been on a gun in its lifetime. Again, any and all information about this particular size would be much appreciated. Thanks for your help guys! -Al0 -
The barrel shank looks way to long to me. I believe what you have is a unfinished Colt barrel that for some reason left the factory, (lunch box, perhaps?) without the final machining to normal length done. 0 -
The flare at point of receiver joint is also wrong for a Woodsman or similar. What are the blurred inscriptions shown? 0
