HEAVY .357 magnum loads
Does anyone have a source for suggested loads for a .357 Magnum with Speer 200 gr .357 TMJs? For use in a Dan Wesson, 10 inch bbl. Thanx!

I have a 1995 Speer book that lists several in their .357 Sillhouette section.
H110, mag primer, 13.5-14.5 gr, 1317-1392 fps
Win 296, mag primer, 13.0-14.0 gr, 1286-1370 fps
AA#9, std primer, 11.7-12.7 gr, 1262-1369 fps
Alliant 2400, mag primer, 11.0-12.0 gr, 1243-1336 fps
IMR 4227, mag primer, 12.2-13.2 gr, 1088-1222 fps
Speer also advises "...a total cyl length of 1.625, not counting rim recesses, if present.", "...should only be used in heavy framed revolvers." Speer also advises trimming the case to 1.275 and using a very firm crimp, with the case mouth covers almost all of the crimping groove.
According to Speer, these bullets were originally designed for the Thompson/Center Contender, and many revolvers don't have cylinders long enough for these bullets. Obviously, excessive cartridge OAL is a problem, and I don't know if your Wesson will handle these or not.
I hope this info helps you out.

Thanx Greg- I use 2400 for some of my lighter .357s, but my manuals came up short on the 200s. Was gifted with a few boxes of these, so thought I would see what I could come up with for 100 meter shoots. I can see where OAL could be an issue- those are BIG bullets. OTOH, there have been 200 gr 38 S&Ws, and 200 gr 38 Specials, so why not? 0 -
If you have .38 Special brass you could load those, then OAl wouldn't be such an issue. You couldn't .357 loads though, I think the smaller cases would result in too much pressure. I bet if you e-mail Alliant they'd have a load for you. I've done that in the past with both Alliant and Accurate and their customer service reps were quite helpful.

Yeah, tried Alliant- came up dry- hence the post here. Will do some careful checking on how much length gets taken up inside a .357 case by the charge, and what OAL would be. Out of a 10 inch anticipate around 1400 fps, for about 840 ft lbs ME. 0 -
Have you tried contacting Speer?
