nosler solid base boattail

Can someone tell me if these were the predecessor to the nosler ballistic tip, and how they stack up against the ballistic tip? Do they have a thicker jacket or no? Thank You

    Yes, those were the predescessor to the Ballistic tip. They worked well as long as you used the proper weights for the game you were chasing. If going after heavy boned and dangerous game, you were always wise to switch to the partition.

    They had a little thinner jacket than today's ballistic tip, as they just tried to stack on the polymer tip to start with. That didn't work well, as the poly tip ignited expansion at a much more rapid pace, and there were a lot of superficial wounds on large game animal's, especially when they were driven at high speeds...like a 30 cal green tip, 150 grain at 3400 FPS from a 300 win mag. I rolled a nice Whitetail buck over with that load at 200 yards from a hit square on the shoulder...never penetrated to the vital's. A few years later, Nosler redesigned the jacket with a taper, for more controlled expansion.

    So the solid base boattail's performed well, and were accurate, but not quite as well or as accurate as the ballistic tip.

    I shot an elk 3 years ago with a 180 Gr. solid base. At 200 yards the first shot went in just in front of the shoulder and out the other side behind the opposite shoulder, bruising the heart. No appearent effect. The second shot went in the shoulder and traveled the length of the elk to the opposite hip bone. The recovered bullet wieghed in at 87 Grs. and the core sepparated from the jacket. the elk took three steps and collapsed. I think the jacket might be on the thin side for elk.

    The 85 grain 243 bullet was so accuract in my TCR that I bought 500 before they were discontinued[:D]
