J-22 pistol fault

The magazine does not go up fully into the breach area unless i push it up from the bottom of the grip with my finger. I can not tell if the magazine is at fault or tab at the bottom of the hand grip that keeps the magazine in place. Any ideas how to find out what is at fault?

    It would be helpful if you identified the pistol. J 22 doesn't ring a bell.

    The Jennings 22's were fun to shoot, but not quality. The problem may be that the magazine floorplate (bottom) needs to be hit with a file (lightly) to remove enough metal so the latch will engage enough to hold it in. This is also a problem with some aftermarket magazines for some of the obsolete pistols.

    Do you mean it won't go in far enough for the gun to operate & fire?

    correct....the lock tab at bottom of hand grip moves in the correct position so the mag will not fall out. I have push up on the mag for it to work correctquote:Originally posted by Fatstrat

    My Jimenez, which is I believe the same pistol under a new name, had same problem. Only it wasn't the magazine as I also at first suspected. 2 things to remember on these guns. They need to be and take awhile to be broke in (1K rds or so). They work best with hotter ammo such as CCI Mini mags. Often when they don't work out of the box, they get sold w/o having enough rds fired to break them in.
    There is a website dedicated to these cheapo pistols (Jennings, Jimenez, Phoenix) called "Ring of Fire.com" as I recall. And in the website they tell how to easily smooth out the rails etc on these guns to make them function better.
    But I didn't even have to do that. The problem with mine turned out to be that when firing Federal bulk,apparently the slide wasn't going far enough back to to pick up the round out of the mag. All I did was disassemble and clean. Lube slide rails with Rem-oil w/Teflon. And get some CCI Mini Mags. Shoots like a sewing machine now.
