Browning a 5 mag.
A friend of mine has a 12 mag. It will not shoot lighter load shells. Can you change the spring or something else to shoot reg. shells?
Thanks

Assume you mean that when your friend shoots 2 3/4 loads the action does not cycle. The friction ring(s) can be set for lighter loads which should allow the action to cycle. The directions about setting the friction rings are under the forearm (glued to the inside) unless they have been removed. If so, simply Google "Browning A5 friction rings" or "Browning A5 manual" or something similar and you'll find the instructions. If changing the friction rings doesn't allow the action to cycle, try oiling the magazine tube/recoil spring. As I remember the instrucitons, that is not supposed to require oil but I've found it to work as a field expedient on more than one pheasant hunting trip. 0 -
Also, at one time the factory listed a seperate recoil spring for the magnum that was longer than one for the std. gun. 0 -
I have an A5 on auction that has the lighter spring in it, the heaver spring goes with the gun. The gentleman I bought it from was a trap shooter and didn't want to fool with moving the frictions around, so bought the lighter spring from Browning.

Here's the deal. The Magnum 12 uses a much heavier recoil spring along with a one inch longer magazine tube. Normal auto 5 recoil springs, barrels, etc. will not just slap in and work. And trying to shoot it without at least one of the bronze recoil bushings will disfigure the barrel lug.
But that's not to say that many haven't been changed up to shoot light loads.
To modify the gun to shoot field loads, use a standard auto 5 recoil spring and bushing, but add a one inch spacer between the reciever and recoil spring. For the spacer, you can use an old mag 12 spring that has been cut and ground flat on the end that was cut. Just be sure it is at least an inch long after grinding the end flat. And even though the barrel extension is for 3 inch shells, it will cycle the shorter shells with no problems.0
