1911AI, Original or Parts Gun?
First, I do have a couple of pictures that I can email, but am currently far from home base and hoping to determine if this .45 appears to be original before I am able to take good close up shots that would help in determining approximate value. If it's a part gun, I really don't care.
Right side of frame is marked:
UNITED STATES PROPERTY M1911AI U.S. ARMY
No.740592
Left side of slide:
"PATENTED APRIL 20, 1897, SEPT. 9, 1902
DEC.19, 1905, FEB. 14, 1911, AUG. 10, 1913
(the above all to the left of the horse, and to the right:
Joe, Frame clearly marked M1911AI. ???? I'll email you the one decent pic I have so far. After that I'll have to give it a rest for a couple of weeks.
"COLT'S PT.F.A. MFG. CO.
HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A.
There are two proof marks visible without disassembly, both capital letter "P", one just behind the mag. release on the left side of the frame, and the other centered on top of the slide about an inch ahead of the rear sight.
Grips are brown plastic, arched housing. Finish is certainly not commercial blue, but seems better than many parkerized 1911's I've seen.

Mixed parts gun.
SerNo 740592 stamped on the frame is a M1911 made late 1914 by The US Armory, Springfield, Mass.
My sincere apologies. I looked up SerNo 74592 by mistake (and overlooked the middle digit).
As noted in the post immediately below, your pistol is a M1911A1, and was manufactured by Colt in 1941. My error, and I sincerely apologize to you, and to the folks that have given this forum its reputation for accuracy. Joe0 -
According to my reference 740592 was made by Colt in 1941. I seem to remember although it's been a long time since I've seen one, that the early W W II Colts were blued. Don't remember what the cut-off date was when they started Parkerizing? 0 -
We really need pictures As you can tell two very knowledgeable people have different opinions of what you describe. . Before that the only thing for sure is 1911 frames dont have a cut in the frame behind the trigger guard and Late WW II guns were parkerized all WW I guns were Black or Blue. 0
