    I would suggest you get it lettered to verify that it is factory engraved. Amount of coverage would appear to be "A" level.

    Maybe S&W has opposite engraving levels than Colt. Their levels of coverage are:

    A: 25%
    B: 50%
    C: 75%
    D: 100%

    clays.......great looking pistol! I think you got a great buy! I certainly would have brought it at that price. Good eye! I am not an expert on engraving so can't comment on that...I leave that to other GB experts but I do envy your purchase!

    It looks like non-factory engraving to me. Plus, the bluing salts were contaminated, giving the barrel & cylinder the plum color.

    I don't know how long it takes, but I have just sent a request to Roy Jinks @ S&W to authenticate this gun. Will post results when I receive them. Thanks for all the input.

    Here is how to tell if the engraving is factory on a smith&wesson. If the s&w engraving on the side is smaller than a non-engraved, then it is factory. It looks to be the small s&w seal, so it should be factory.
