Have a 1860 Colt Conversion with a 3 digit matching munbers. How can I tell if this is a percussion returned for conversion or one made in the 1870's as a cartridge gun?...

    This is a Colt Richards conversion of the Model 1860 Army. Notice the breechplate with integrated rear sight and rebated cylinder. The Colt 1871-1872 "Open Top" revolver does not have a conversion breechplate nor a rebated cylinder.

    I've pictured the Richards conversion above. It was a factory conversion of the 1860 Army, not a factory-produced cartridge revolver.

    Thanks Spider..The only difference I see (from Your Picture) is the number on the conversion ring. Mine donot have any numbers on the ring. One other thing is the 3 digit serial number gun is a 4 screw model..

    Bear in mind that Colt and Remington were attempting to compete in the cartridge revolver market until the Rollin White patent, owned by Smith & Wesson, expired. Conversions were in the experimental stage and you will find some slight variations in the Richards and Richards-Mason conversions.

    Been there and seen that.. Going with my knowledge and observations, I'm thinking this 3 digit gun is a first year percussion returned to the facttory and converted in the 1870's. I have never seen or read about the later models produced with a 4 screw frame,( unless it was lying around the factory), no Gov. markings and originally nickel plated finish again leads me to a Civilian model returned.
