Norinco SKS

I have an opportunity to take in trade a Norinco SKS (folding stock)that the owner claims is a pre ban type. I have read the previous topics in the forum which regard there not being a ban on this particular firearm. I am not very knowledgeable in SKS's as far as what a milled receiver looks like compaired to another. Could someone please clarify that description? Would that be one that accepts AK mags? Or would it still take SKS mags?

    A guy I know has a Norinco SKS, and as was necessary for these versions, it had the bayo removed, and a 10 round fixed mag, so it could be imported as a sporting rifle, not C&R like my Yugo 59/66A1.
    My question is this,........I was under the impression that the bayo lugs were supposed to have been ground off of these rifles when they were imported. His still has the lug, and now he is getting ready to play the 10 parts or less game with it, and is wanting to know if he must grind off the bayonet lug to be legal. He is going to put Tapco T-6 stock, and 20 round detachable magazine, and also replace his op-rod, and gas piston, with US made compliance parts. I just hate to see him grind off the lug if he doesn't have to. Hoping Neal or someone familiar with the game of 922r can chime in on this one!

    It's possible to do by extensive machine work on the receiver. Nothing that will just drop in, will enable a SKS to function with AK mags.

    It is possible, but it is difficult and not something that a hobbyist is likely to be able to accomplish. There will be modifications needed to the receiver as well as some welding in order to attach a AK magazine release to the front of the trigger guard. I don't think it is a viable option to convert an SKS to accept AK magazines.

    A relatively small number of Chinese SKS's were factory built to use AK mags (SKS-M, SKS-D, and MC-5D models). As stated, it is possible to modify an SKS to use an AK mag, but it can't be converted back. Most SKS was designed to be reloaded with 10 round stripper clips and this system is hard to beat for dependability and speed. Detachable mags are inherently less reliable than fixed mags.

    Most common comment I hear from folks that attempted the conversion is how poorly it works. Stripper clips are fast if you learn how.

    brute187.....like you, I went down this road several years ago when SKS's were the rage. Ended up spending a bit of money and nothing worked well. Gave up on the idea and purchased a Norinco SKS "Sporter" D Model from SOG. Found out later that they are rather rare but can be found from time to time on the auction side of GB. Recommend that you go that way. To answer your question: possible to do, yes, cost a lot, yes, satisfactory? No.

    Never heard of any such aftermarket conversion product, and if it existed, I'm sure I would have.

    Yes, its possible, but the costs and labor involved are such that its its neither practical nor cost effective. Remember, you can buy an entire Romanian AK for under $400 right now. Why are you going to much around with an SKS this way?

    There *ARE* factory made SKS rifles that were designed to take AK mags, and they will. . .though these are so expensive now, that you might as well just buy an AK.

    Brand new det-mag solution: There's a feller who has made an insert block that semi-permanantly fills the "duck's beak" portion of any standard chinese SKS magwell and thereafter you can use slightly modified polymer AK47 detachable mags.

    Seems to be all the rage on the SKS Survivor boards..

    ...from the multiple detailed photos and writeup, it appears to be a very common-sense approach to eliminating the gaudy duck-bill SKS mags.

    I think it's called the DUCKBILLESS or Duck Bill Less adapter/mag block.
