i've had 3, back in the 70's and 80's, two 7x57s and a 300 Win Mag. loved em all. very accurate horizontally but all had vertical stringing of groups. loved the handling, simplicity and strength. also the extra half-second i took aiming because i knew I had only one shot definitely accounted for 2 extra deer and cost me none.

Have #1 in .243 and love it. I am a believer that if I can't hit a deer or 'yote with one shot it deserves to get away.[:)]

Having owned a few I know they are pretty as heck, but they can be finicky on accuracy. The oft blamed attribute is the forend attachment to the barrel. Many "fixes" offered over at the Ruger Forum. I had a 7 Rem Mag that I finally gave up on, my 375 H & H and 458 shoot very well though.

I'd love to buy something in a heavy barreled type No1 for target or varmint (something in the 25 cal area) but since Ruger did away with the adjustable trigger and the "will it shoot?" question I've not taken the jump. My Winchester 1885 in 7 WSM is on the other hand unerringly accurate.

I have one in 45-70 and like it a lot. Very strong action so I can shoot hot loads if I wish.

I wish I stnd still had my #1 in 30-06. I had the version that has the short forearm, barrel band for the sling, and sights. A gunsmith buddy fixed mine so it didn't have a barrel band, sights, and then he reblued it, put a stud for the sling in the stock, and then I put a small, low power scope on it. One day I might have to do another like it.

The only issue is it is a light rifle for 30-06.
