Rem. VTR

Are there any opinions on the triangular bbl. Mostly interested in small cal's. 204, 223. How about the ported bbl. I'm interested in the accuracy, or other advantages. THX HAWKSHAW

    I have the triangular barrel, ported, I don't think the triangular barrel adds anything to accuracy, its just different, but I am very happy with mine in 308, shoots great.

    Accuracy depends on the straightness of the hole down the middle of the barrel and the consistency of the diameter of that hole from end to end. The most important feature of any barrel is the perpendicularity of the crown to the bore. The outside shape of the barrel has little if anything to do with accuracy as long as you pay attention to the above.

    We can make the outside almost any shape so long as the shaping is done at the proper time in the manufacturing process. Porting is much the same, it needs to be done at the proper time and we remove the lands and open up the bore slightly just behind the muzzle/crown, similar to the way a compensator is designed. This forces most of the plasma up and out through the ports.

    I found the triangular barrels, with and without ports, to be as accurate as round tapered barrels as long as the manufacturer did their jobs correctly.

    I have shot both the LVSF, and VTR in 22-250, and can see no difference in either. The stock on the VTR sucks, like the majority of the Remington injection molded stocks. The triangular barrel is nothing but a round barrel with 3 sides milled off, presumably in a CNC operation. It offers nothing more, IMHO, but a bigger dent in the wallet.
