Gibbs Enfield 45/70
Does anyone here know what the pressure level is for this rifle in 45/70? I figure its safe with the normal loads but how about the +p stuff? Thanks

Maximum CUP presure for the 303 British is around 44,800lbs, hot loads in the 45-70 with 400gr bullets can run close to 50,000 lbs.
I built a Siamese Mauser in 45-70 just for that reason, it will withstand the high presure elephant loads. I would be carefull, if you load, read the presures in the book, if your book doesn't have them, buy another book. If your buying factory ammo, read the box, do your research, it will keep you healthy.

most loading manuals list three loading levels for the .45/70, the Gibbs is based on the british enfield action so I wouldn't go above the mid-range loadings (win. 1886 type). 0 -
I have one and always used the 2nd level - 1886, 1895 pressure levels with no problems. FWIW, mine shoots 405 grain lead very poorly, even the hard cast moly coated "Bear Creek" stuff. Copper jacketed 300, 350 & 405 shoots very well though.
BTW, I found an Enfield stock with a recoil pad fitted - much more pleasant to shoot. Cost me about $30.00 at a gun show.0
