Rem 700 stock / action question
Well here is the deal, I bought a Rem 700 with a 257 roberts barrel on it (This was not factory) then i switched the barrel to a heavy 308 factory barrel. Will a small action stock fit this rifle or will i need a long action. And how to tell the diff.

A 700 .257 Roberts would be a long action . Hence you'll be needing a long action stock . 0 -
Better measure. You said the 257 Roberts barrel was not factory so possibly it is not on a long action. The 257 Roberts parent cartridge requires a long action but the cartridge can be loaded with the bullets seated deep enough so that they can fit in a smaller than long action. Measuring the action to be sure might be a good thing to do before buying a new stock. 0 -
A really easy way to tell is to lay the rifle down, bolt side up, get a ruler and measure the receiver from that nice square surface just forward of the bolt handle to the front edge of the receiver ring. A short action is 5 9/16" and a long action is 6 7/16". 0 -

I'm confused, I have 257R and 308, Both in Rem 722. Are the 700s that different? 0 -
The 722 is a short action receiver. Its counterpart, the 721, is a long action. 0
