AK 47 question

I was wondering,
I have a Romanian AK 47 and it came with a cover over the threads, were one would attach a flash suppressor, but the cover is welded on.
My question is would it be legal for me to remove the thread cover?

And does anyone know a way to remove it without damaging the barrel?

Any help and advice is greatly appreciated.

    It is legal IF you make the rest of the gun 922r compliant. Use the search function and you will find tons of info on 922r.

    The 1989 Bush ban on imported assault weapons made threaded barrels a deadly feature and prohibited nealry all semi automatic rifles with a detachable magazine from importation. If you want to add a threaded barrel (either by physically threading or by removing the cover) you need to be compliant with the regulation which allows for a specific number of parts being replaced to make an imported rifle "American Made" and no longer covered by the Bush Ban. Are you 100% sure that the barrel is actually threaded under that cover? Sometimes they are but just as often they are not and removing the cover simply exposes a length of unthreaded barrel.

    I removed mine on my Wasr 10. Barrel was not threaded underneath.

    Got the old dremmel out and slowy and carefully ground the weld down to where I could crack the rest of it off.

    Any muzzle attachment you want to put on needs to be US made. For more clarity on this search for 922r.

    US parts on most Romanians (imported by Century) are:
    Fire Control Group: (trigger, disconnector, hammer) 3
    Pistol Grip: 1
    Gas Piston: 1

    If you want to put a brake on the rifle, the brake needs to be US made or you need to add another US made parts somewhere else.

    Edit: Note this is for rifles only. AK Pistols are not required to have US parts.

    Thanks to you all for the advice and information.
    I went ahead and cut the weld with the drem and actually found it was threaded. Woo hoo!
    I have also just ordered a Tapco flash hider to stay complient.

    Congratulations on the full thread discovery. Try a J-Tac47 or FSC47 style instead. You'll like either one better. I believe the results will be more favorable considering the videos out there demonstrating one arm full auto shooting with a AK47 with a J-Tac47 brake on. It seems to cut down noise coming back at the shooter with very little muzzle climb if any. It's way more than a bird cage flash-hider ever could be or the common AK styles.
