.44-40...The best BANG for the BUCK!!
Who makes the best SAA copy in .44-40 for the money? I've looked into EAA, EMF, Cimmarron, Heritage, Navy Arms, Uberti and Taylor's in magazines and the Blue Book, but haven't seen any of them in person.
I can't afford a Colt!!!

Well the best copy is probably USFA but they are priced in the same neighborhood as a Colt. Uberti makes a lot of the guns for other companies so if you buy a Cimarron you are getting a Uberti--just maybe with a different finish. I once owned an American Arms Regulator and it was a nice gun-made by Uberti. For the price and quality either Cimarron or an actual Uberti is a good choice. I believe the Heritage big bores only comes in .357 and .45 Colt.
EMF's guns come from Pietta, Davide Pedersoli and Uberti depending on the model or type of gun.
There is also the Ruger Vaquero both Old and New Model. The old model is on a Blackhawk frame and the new ones are closer to a SAA frame but you can only get .44/40 in an old model.
Are you stuck on .44/40 only or would .45 Colt work--.44/40 ammo is usually more expensive and not always as easy to find. If you reload then thats not a issue.0 -

Max I think you may have read my post wrong--I never said the Old Model Vaquero didn't come in .45 Colt--I have a Stainless version--I said that you can only get the .44/40 chambering in an Old Model. The New Models are .357 and .45 Colt only.
Old Models could be bought in .357, .44WCF for a few years, .44 Mag, .45 Colt0 -
some of the old ruger vaquero,s in 44-40 had .426-427 dia. cylinder thoarts and .429-430 dia. barrels and would not shoot worth bababooey untill you opened up the cylinder holes. i sold my 44-40 vacquero and bought one in 44 mag and just load it down to 44-40 ballistics, plus i can still use full 44 mag loads for big game hunting. i have five 44-40 rifles that shoot very good due to the proper relationship between chamber dia and barrel dia, eastbank. 0 -
Thanks Ruger41 and others...Yes I'm after the .44-40, 'cause I've got a Navy Arms Yellowboy Trapper (16 1/2" w/ saddle ring) in .44-40 and wanted a SAA copy handgun and a lever action in the same caliber, just like the guys in the Old West. I have this same set-up in .22, .357, .44 Mag, .410 and I'm trying to do it in .44-40. (The .410 combo is a Win. 9410, and a Taurus Judge, NOT a SAA, darnit!!)
It has taken me MANY years to acquire all these guns 'cause "I'm more broke than the Ten Commandments!", but I'm also very stubborn and persistant, (and a 55 year old bachelor!!!!)
Looks like an Uberti built gun, whoever the importer..., is the most economical answer so far.

BTW blair in the picture in my signature line the guns are Cimarron's and Cimarron has TONS of variations that you can pick to customize your revolver. 0 -

I have an old Vaquero in 44-40. It's large framed but a very nice handgun. If I need to shoot for accuracy, that's the one I grab. I love all my 45 Colts, but this is my favorite to shoot. 0 -
I'm not sure if it's offered in 44-40, but take a look at the usfa "rodeo" basic saa, made in america. very high quality gun

I asked Bob Munden that question who's been gunsmithing Single Action Army revolvers for 50+ years and puts extreme stress on them with his fast-draw demonstrations. He thought a lot of the Ruger Vaquero's reliability and quality, considerably over the Italians', and at a comparable price. 0
