Remington 799 to 17 Ackley Hornet Questions

Hello All:

I think I am going to go all out on the 17 hornet. I just acquired a nice little Remington 799 in a 22 hornet. I'm going to play around with it for a bit, while I have the chance to get a good little barrel.

Now I know that Remingtons are threaded 1.062" x 16 TPI, but I don't know if that is the case for the mini mauser 799. I was hoping for a few good barrel suggestions to get this rolling.

I know I will need to have everything timed and headspaced to the action. Any suggestions would be GREAT.

I'd love to go with the Cooper, but this one kind of fell in my lap this weekend.

    I doubt they changed to 1.062" x20 for Remington's sake.

    The Remington M799 is actually the Zastava Mini Mauser as was distributed by Charles Daly before Remington outbid them for distribution rights. Interarms was the distributor before them.

    I told you this in the original thread. The Mini Mauser uses metric threads and you need a gunsmith to handle this. Be sure he understands that he has to know how to cut metric threads.

    You can get .17 caliber barrels from several barrel makers, you just have to choose the right contour to match the action. Brownells sells several brands but you can also check with Lothar Walther to get some good advice:

    They don't list the .17 Hornet chamber reamer although it won't hurt to ask about it. They are a CNC shop so the threads can be done by them as well. Call and talk with them.

    Oops. I can't believe I missed that. I think I got a little too excited. Picked up the used 799 cheap, and started counting chickens. I try to search old posts before I "raise my hand", but I got a little ahead of myself.

    The 17 Ackley hornet should work fine. I have barreled CZ in this caliber, rented the reamer and gauges from 4D products. Yes the threads are metric, but a good gunsmith should be able to cut them.
