Difference between Skeet and Trap shotguns

Can someone tell me what the difference between a shotgun that is labled as a Trap or Skeet. Thanks

    Where to begin? Assuming you know the difference in the 2 events, there are a few basic mechanical differences in the guns used for them based mainly on distance and angle to the flying clay target. Trap guns tend to have longer barrels (30 or 32"), tighter chokes (full) and straighter stocks (less drop).They often have wider vent ribs. Skeet guns have shorter barrels (26" most common) and skeet chokes (several variations larger than imp cyl). Differences in value, models and variations is a whole subject in itself. A book could be written on the subject.Probably has been. I'm sure you will get additional information as it is a broad subject.

    drl50 was right in all of his comments. In a nutshell, trap is a sport using a 12 ga shotgun where the flying clay target is shot as it is rising and going away from the shooter who usually hits the target around 25 yards from his/her position, which for the singles event is 16 yards from the traphouse. Skeet is shot much closer, in events using all gauges (including 12 ga) and below but excluding the 16 ga. Skeet targets are shot at angles crossing in front of the shooter and above. As mentioned, the trap stock is built to allow the shot pattern to more easily hit a rising target and at much longer ranges...sometimes as far as 50 yards. Skeet stocks are lower to alow for no rise in the target path and a quicker lateral swing...because of the close distance (sometimes less than 10 yards) there is very little choke constiction in skeet guns.     Some guns that are labled trap or skeet refers to the Grade only. Winchester put the better wood on a trap grade than a skeet grade and they had nothing to with the set up of the gun.

    trap guns are good for ducks, geese, and turkeys - skeet guns are good for quail and other flushing birds.

    Some trap only guns are also single shot single barrel guns.
