Thanks to all for your input. BUT, can you tell me where to find any written law (ATF preferably), as to what I would have to produce to an ATF agent during an audit, to show that I complied with their requirements. THX again HAWKSHAW

The era of ammunition record keeping on the federal level ended over a quarter century ago, and the old ammo bound book is something that only we old time dealers remember. What type of "audit" are you anticipating from a BATFE compliance officer regarding your ammunition sales? You need to establish an age of 18 for rifle ammunition and 21 for handgun ammunition as well as being convinced that the sale of so called interchangeable ammunition (used in both handgun or rifle) is going to be used only in a long gun for a purchaser under the age of 21.
If you want to play it 100% safe simply use the same ID requirements for ammunition sales that are required for the execution of Form 4473. These are outlined in detail on the 4473 Notice, Instructions and Definitions, Section B, Question 20a: Identification, Know your customer. If you are an FFL dealer then you surely have a 4473 on hand for study.

Hi Mark---No your not to vague. I just assumed that if the law prevents the sales you describe (which I am aware of), to persons under those age requirements, that there must be a written law that states what is required at the time of sale, and for my records after that. Mabey there is no such requirement. If there is, I can't find it, and from the response here, it appears that no one else can either. THX HAWKSHAW 0 -
What does your state law say about ammo sales? Here you have to be 21 to buy handgun ammo and 18 to buy rifle ammo. The same id is required as that for selling alchol or tobacco products. Any photo state or federal id with birthdate on it. 0 -

But that is why every thing you buy is for a rifle. [;)] I ran into this when I lived in Indiana. The state allows people under 21 to own a handgun, however you can't purchase the ammunition. So I started buying 9mm "rifle" ammunition instead of pistol. [:)]0 -

Unless it's a face to face situation there is no way you can be absolutely sure your selling to the person who sends you their identification. Either you accept it or not. It's not worth stressing out about IMHO. If it's a large quantity of ammo value wise, have the transaction go through a FFL who can verify who the actual purchaser is. Just a couple of hundred rounds, sell it locally so you won't have to be loosing any sleep at night, over it. 0 -

Did you read my post where I told you to use the guidelines outlined for proof of age used on Form 4473? 20b covers what the BATFE considers to be alternative documentation. The FFL dealer has the final say so on what he or she considers to be a valid identification. Even if the ID meets every single BATFE specification if you the dealer are not satisfied that the buyer is of the proper age you can quash the sale on the spot. When we hit ten on this one we are finished, there is no reasons for a Part III on what is actually an extremely simple question which has been asked and answered several times over in two different threads. 0 -

After thinking this one over we are finished now. If you need the actual regulation by number and word for word simply contact your local BATFE field office and ask to speak to an inspector. The BATFE will be able to give you the precise regulation (if in fact one exists).0
