TO answer your question i don't know how to do pics. but on one side of blade it says.
US then P below that and JN below that and N. STARR below that. thank-you

    i have this sword i don't know if this is a date thats on the bottom of the handle or model # could anyone tell me if this is from the civil war or a earlyier one. and is there any value to put it on the auction site or is it just a wall hanger thank-you iw348@yahoo.com ON one side of blade it says US below that is P and below that is JN and below that is N.STARR ----THANK-YOU

    It sounds like a US Model 1818 Nathan Starr contract sword, inspected by John Newbury ("JN"), a US small arms inspector from 1817-1826.

    Does it look anything like this one? Is the scabbard steel or leather?

    I did some searching and found a couple that had been listed for sale with start prices around $400 and expected final bids to be around $1800 but you had to join the auction site to see the final results.

    There were 10,600 of these ordered but I didn't find anything that said whether they were all actually produced or not.

    A lot of three of them sold last month for $900 for all of them:

    Although they are collectible, I think the fact that they were too late for the War of 1812 and too early for the Civil War limits collector interest. You should list it on auction with your minimum price and no reserve and let the bidders determine the final value.
