recommendations for a lightweight quality sporter?

i am considering buying a lightweight (6.5 lb max) sporter in an efficient short action caliber (260, 7mm08 etc) basically for whitetails in both eastern woods and midwestern plains. want a cut above the ruger/rem/winch generics. thinking of a cooper 54, HS precision, nosler 48 TGR, or maybe sako. must have an excellent trigger, around MOA accuracy, either quality layered synthetic (like H-S/macmillan) or walnut stock.

appreciate any experiences, thoughts or suggestions.

    The 260 Remington is a top notch choice. You already have a couple good idea's in rifles. The Cooper 22 would be my second choice, and I would go after a SAKO 85 with all my heart, if I were you. I have a SS Browning A-Bolt II in 260, and it is an awesome shooter. You will want to have as good or better optics on the rifle, as the rifle itself.

    If the Remington Custom Shop is an option, then I would highly reccommend the Model 7 KS Custom.

    For weight consideration, I have a Model 7 FS, that Remington only made in 1987. It is basically a production version of the 7 KS Custom. It weighs 5 1/4 pounds out of the box(advertised). I cleaned the sights off mine, and mounted a Leupold compact 3-9 VX-II. With sling and 5 rounds, it weighs 6 lbs-2oz.

    The New Ultra Light Arms, is a viable option too, as Nononsense has pointed out, and you can get it chambered in a couple other calibers that you have not listed, like the 6.5-284, and the 284 Winchester...just bigger brother's to the 260, and 7-08. Although any of them are suitable for any non-dangerous game up to and including Moose. By non-Dangerous, I mean game that will track you, like the big bears.

    Either cartridge would be perfect for your stated uses.

    Does this weight limit include the scope, bases and rings?

    If yes, you might need to rethink the selection and take a look at the New Ultralight Arms.

    If not then you still need to be a little more selective since it might only be the Cooper that can be made that light.

    No matter what, skip the HS Precision and the Nosler since they are not what I consider to be in the same class as a Cooper even if the ad writers state it as being true.

    I know you wrote that you wanted a 'cut above' the Remington but I think that this is more than a cut above:

    Titanium 7mm-08

    The Remington M700 Titanium actions are made by an outside supplier and they are super precise! Well worth the money and time to get a rifle built the way you want it.

    Sako maks EXCELLENT rifles, that would be my first choice. I have Finnbear in .30-06 and it's probably my favorite bolt gun. It is fairly light weight and has excellent trigger pull(2-2.5lbs). The 85's are awesome too. My second suggestion would be a Steyr Mannlicher SBS Montain rifle. These are VERY light and super accurate. I have one in 6.5x55 and hunt Michigan white tail every year with it and love it. If you are looking on the cheaper side, take a look at the Weatherby line. They make excellent lightweight bolt guns that are much more affordable without jeopardizing performance. The ultralight series tend to be a bit more pricey thought. Good luck[;)]

    i like CZs but they all seem on the heavy side. i have a beretta mato in 270 for that purpose: minimal walking and mostly wanting steady shots from a stand. love it!
    hadn't considered Rem Titaniums and appreciate the info. any thought on their synthetic stocks however? are they just cheapie injection molded, or better? or sako synthetic stocks as well?

    laogai.......if I was in your position, and cost was not an object (as it must not be as you don't mention it as one of your variables) I would not do anything until I talked to Melvin Forbes at New Ultra Light Rifle in WV. Melvin will make you a rifle that will meet your specs and one that would be "...a cut above." I have recently talked with him on the phone and am thinking about getting myself one of his fine rifles as an advance birthday gift to......me. I am partial to the 6.5x55 and spoke to Melvin about that caliber which he can do. You have been given his website in this thread so I would us it and give him a call.....when I called he answered his own phone! Great guy! Sako is great also, but chat with Melvin first IMHO.
