22 hornet or 221 Remington Fireball
I have gotten a little tired of the big bore stuff for a while. I have been considering a 22 Hornet or a 221 Remington Fireball. We have a 300 yard range and I'm looking for something to have a lot of fun shooting and reloading. I already have a little Springfield USAF survival in the hornet/410 configuaration. I have dies and brass, but that never stopped me before. I'm looking for a little kickbutt cartridge that will deliver smiles on the range. I've been looking at Remington bolt actions simply because of the luck I've has with them.

I have a hornet and K hornet, 300 yds is a little far for either one. I would recommend a 222 Rem over the 221. It will make you smile at 300 yds. 0 -
I have a 222 in an o/u Tikka combo. I love it. I have just been looking at a few different little calibers. The range is set up at 50, 100, 200, and 300 yards. Don't necessarily HAVE to get to the 300 yard, I was just looking at something small and CHEAP to reload good ammo for and have a lot of fun. I've gone the big caliber route, and now I want to go small. 0 -
Have a Cooper Varmint in 221 FireBall. Shoots 40 Gr BlitzKings at 3400 fps with 15.7 gr of Lil'Gun. Hammers woodchucks. Only worked at 250 yards so far, but the test target from Cooper AND my own would measure well under .030" @ 100 yards. Never seen or owned a Hornet that would come close. 0 -

There is nothing better than taking some time to shoot small, accurate cartridges. Most are simple to load, mild to shoot and easy on the billfold.
I shoot both the Hornet and the K-Hornet and I prefer the K-Hornet. It's a better all-around cartridge.
The .221 Fireball is superb with the lighter bullets and I can recommend it highly.
If you want to consider another alternative, I suggest looking at the .17 Remington Fireball. This nearly an exact replica of the .17 Mach IV cartridge developed on the .221 Fireball case. This cartridge is an absolute hoot to shoot!

You have been reading my mind again. I've been in my reloading books, and the 17 Remington Fireball hit me too. I think I have decided on the 17. Hey, I've gone the 338 Lapua route and now I miss the little bangers. My only question now is the 700 VTR or the 700 Varmint SF SS.0 -

If I ever had a rifle that would average .09" I have no way of knowing. Way beyond my present benching ability. My hats off to you for holding .09. As for the .03, are you sure we aren't looking at a misplaced decimal point???[:D][:D]0 -

I agree with the above. That Nononsense guy, sure knows how to pick em'.[:D][:D][:D] I have a Cooper Model 38 Montana Varmint, in 17 Remington Fireball. With factory loads, on a calm day, it puts 3 shots thru one 17 cal slightly oval hole. Good luck finding one though, as mine is not for sale...
I will also note, that I have had great luck with a Remington XR-100 in 223 Remington. Shooting 62 grain Remington match loads, it will routinely shoot sub 1/2" groups at 200 yards. This rifle has not been touched, other than mounting a scope.

Buy a COOPER!!!!! They are at least as accurate as advertised. The .17 rem will give you a little more range than the fireball. The only problem I've had with the fast ,17's is that the bore HAS to be kept really clean. Ten rounds, and clean. HAWKSHAW 0
