PSL-54C Questions
Had some questions on the PSL-54C dmr, aka;
the Romak III, FPK, FPK Dragunov and SSG-97, isn't this the exact same rifle under different names for importation and marketing?
Is the receiver thickness on the PSL-54C dmr 1.5mm thick with a pinned chromed barrel?
Are all the bayonet lugs on the PSL-54C dmr neutered, I understand that it is possible to change it out for a new bayonet lug combo flash hider?
Where is the best most reputable place to get a well built, un-canted sights, PSL-54C dmr?
What is your opinion of the PSL-54C dmr as a dmr, worth having?
Thanx

Yes, PSL = Romak III = FPK = SSG-97. Same gun, different names.
I've not seen the term FPK-Dragunov, but yeah, sounds like more of the same.

Haven't the foggiest idea what the receiver thickness is here, though its probably fair to assume that these only come in one thickness!.

Many of them are, and probably all of the recent imports. "All"? No, some of the older imported ones or ones that have been built up from parts kits may retain a functional bayonet lug. For example:
http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/tilted-weaponry/154548-2010-century-psl-54c-aimsurplus.html
The image here from AIM surplus seems to show a bayonet lug, though it may well have had the "wings" ground off and be non-functional. You'd have to call them and ask them specifically about that.

I've never seen nor heard of a flash-hider/bayonet mount. I'm not quite sure how that would work since the handguard of the standard AK bayonet has a hole in it to slip over the muzzle, meaning that a flash-hider with bayo mount would have to be really long. But if you say these exist, so be it.
I've heard that the standard Romanian AK front sight base will fit on these. Not sure if the standard gas-block bayonet lug will, but if so, that might be one way to get one onto your gun.
Lastly, I suppose you could always weld on a bayonet lug.

They're probably all coming from the same place (IE Romania) though the same importer (ie Century). Which retailer you buy it from isn't going to change the inventory or build quality. If you were really concerned,
More important, I think is just making sure that the one YOU get has uncanted sights, and that you can return/exchange it if there is a problem. Most places will do a "hand inspect" for you if you ask.
AIM surplus is one source (see above). I've had good experiences with Classic Arms in NC in the past, and I'm sure if you told them your concern about canted sights they could check their inventory to see if that is an issue.
I suppose you could have one professionally built up from a parts kit, though that's likely to cost you quite a bit more money.

You mean a designated marksman rifle?
Do you intend to get into a gunfight at 300+ yards? I think most civilians don't really need to worry about that, but stipulating that this applies to you, this gun could work.
It seems to works fine in that role in the Middle East and Eastern Bloc countries that use it. If you're looking for something that will give you AK-like simplicity and reliability, but in a significantly more powerful caliber and that can actually give you a reasonable chance of hitting something at 300-400 yards, this will work. Other guns, obviously, could work too, and weighing the various choices is the topic of ten more threads like this one.
Plusses here are that the gun itself is fairly inexpensive (with optic usually included) and at only about $0.20 per round, the surplus 7.62x54R ammo is still cheap to shoot.
Minuses? Gun is just not all that accurate, though at least some of this is because the milsurp ammo tends not to be that accurate. Good handloads could probably make this more accurate, but then you negative the benefits of the cheap milsurp ammo.
My take on this gun is that its basically a fun long-range plinker that's low maintenance, cheap to feed, and happens to look pretty cool. If were REALLY going into combat, I think I'd probably rather spend more to get more, but I think you could do worse.0 -

Ok, I am going to presume then that since the PSL-54C dmr is based on the RPK that it should have a 1.5mm receiver as well then.
Concerning the dragunov front sight bayonet assemblies, I have seen them from time to time here and there and they look long however I am not sure if they would fit on the PSL-54C dmr from what you have pointed out since they appear to be for the SVD.
No on the gunfight, as I wouldn't want to shoot anyone and I think I will try and avoid combat if at all possible. This would just be for target shooting and hunting is all and it was easier to use the 3 letter dmr designation is all. I have heard that these rifles are capable of 800 meter accuracy however I personally haven't so I am not sure about that.
AIM and Classic Arms seems to have a good reputation,
what about J&G, SOG and Atlantic Firearms, as I have seen these there too?
Thank you for the detailed review on the PSL-54C dmr that helps alot.
If you are familiar with the Maadi AKM, I am trying to find out on another thread in ATE if they have 1.5mm receivers...

If you say so.
Isn't it enough for you to know that a PSL does what it needs to do? Unlike an actual AK, you're never going to be firing 30 rounds from this thing in full-auto fire. So receiver thickness probably isn't nearly as important.

You said a flash hider/bayonet mount (see above).
Front-sight/bayonet mounts, yeah THOSE exist. Would one fit on a PSL? I don't know, but it seems likely to me that with the proliferation of AK-like guns out that you could find one that would either directly fit, or would with some modification.

OK. If so, why do you care about the bayonet? [:p]
If you mean informal target shooting, this should be pretty fun.
For "serious" (ie competitive) target shooting, I think there are far better choices. If you're capable of 800 yard accuracy (and I don't think I am), then I think you'll probably want more out of your gun than you're likely to get with this platform. If you mean hitting a VEHICLE at 800 yards, that's likely possible with this gun with the right shooter, ammo, and conditions. Hitting a PERSON? Wouldn't count on it.
For hunting, this could work, though the gun isn't all that light (9.5lbs), nor compact (45" overall length). Is this better in that role than say a Saiga .308 for roughly the same cost (let alone more expensive guns like AR-10 variants?). Not entirely clear to me that it is.

The first two are just ones I've done multiple transactions with in the past so I can tell you from experience they're good. J&G and SOG generally enjoy good reputations too. I don't know anything about Atlantic and can't comment on it.
quote:Thank you for the detailed review on the PSL-54C dmr that helps alot.
You're welcome, though I hardly think I gave a "detailed review". In a nutshell, I think of a PSL as a big scoped AK that's a little more accurate and uses 7.62x54R.

Not terribly hard.
The Egyptian rifles you mention are built on Soviet-manufactured Russian machinery imported into Egypt when it was a Cold-war client. Since the Russian guns use the thinner 1mm receivers, the Maadi guns do too.
Again, more of an issue with sustained full-auto fire than a few shots at pumpkins at your local range.0 -

Prefer a heavier receiver is all so when it runs out of ammo it can be used as a club...

Yeah, because its shorter than saying front sight/flash hider/bayonet mount assembly and should get the general consensus across.

Because when you run out of ammo it can be used as a spear...

Seems to be what is was designed for and I have heard of a few accounts of such, isn't difficult to hit targets at 500 meters open sight on a military firing range...

Weight isn't a concern...

Detailed enough for the info that I was looking for.

Never thought it was difficult just inquired if you knew is all as I obviously did not. Anyway sounds like it was trouble from some of the responses, but appreciated, thanks just the same.
Good day to you.0
