bolt re-weld??

I have been looking into buy one of these for a few years. The re-welded bolt concerns me. I think that would significantly effect the value. He is still asking about top what they are worth at auction. Are my concern warranted?

for the price (w/scope) a decent deal, the reweld (while not pretty) isn't a safty factor. 0 -
The bolt handles on these were originally silver soldered on. I would not buy it unless an original bolt was available. 0 -
Might have knocked the handle off trying to extract an overload case???? 0 -
If it wasn't put back exactly where it should be, the timing may very well be off.... 0 -
Bolt handles are often welded on. What would concern me is that whoever did this was an amateur and might not have properly pack it which could have resulted in it being softened. 0 -
Buy the rifle, and send the bolt to Jim the Boltman:

I wouldn't buy it with a rewelded bolt. If the guy that did the welding didn't know what he was doing as far as keeping heat away from bolt head/lugs, there might be problems as far as safety is concerned.
If you are interested in purchasing it even with the rewelded bolt, check with Vic Havlin he specializes in parts for Mossbergs and is president of the Mossberg Collectors Association. If anybody could come up with a replacement bolt it would be him.0 -
The stock on that Mossberg is original . Those 800BVs are scarce and a heck of a shooter with their 25" Accro-Groove barrel . It Looks to me like the bolt would be just fine . Everybody uses wire feed welders now and heat is not the issue it once was . Those bolts have 4 massive locking lugs and I don't think welding on the handle would affect them at all . There was one on the auction side about 6 weeks ago that I bid on up to $350.00 , it sold for $468.00 . I'd like one to rechamber to .243AI , and shoot F-Class with . Thanks for pointing out this auction !!! 0 -
The bolt reweld is a sloppy job that could be reworked if it bothered you.
You can see by the colors the bolt body was kept cool as the yellow tempering color only travelled an inch or so from the bolt handle.
The reason for breakage would concern me.
I would inspect the chamber very carefully for ringing, resulting from a serious overload that caused and would continue to cause difficult extraction.
Get inspection privileges if you have to buy it.0 -
