Rem 700 SA and 7MM Mauser

I and a friend are having a discussion. A Remington 700 SA will not work with the 7MM Mauser cartridge will it? Not if I have done my math correctly. He says it will.

    Basically, no. The 257 Roberts (same case as 7x57 but with .257 bullet) has been used in short actions but the length restrictions don't allow a decent weight bullet. Since the case is already 6mm longer than the basic .308 (51mm) there is little room for the exposed length of bullet.

    I believe the 1981 Classic was short action.

    However, FWIW, my personal opinion is that the SA IS too short for the 7mm Mauser case. There is a slew of good bullets that have to be seated very deeply or not used at all because of the short action. This would be much better suited in a long action like the Mauser action it was originally chambered in.

    Remington did it right when they made the 8mm in a long action.

    Seems like Remington's criteria was 2.8" or shorter with a standard weight bullet was how they determined that. With a 139/140 spitzer it would be short enough to fit in a short action. But the round itself was initially developed with a 173 gr. round nose that went about 3.070". They weren't seated deeply into the cases to give full power to the case.
