M 1906 Winchester (Pictures Added)

This week I picked up this Winchester and after getting it home and looking it over real good there is almost no marks in the blue except for some little rust marks around two of the screws on the the tang. The stock is dull orange color and I cannot see that it has been sanded and other that the upper tang being a little bit high in the wood, little nicks and bruises the stock looks fair. The hand grip has one small chip out of it and is the same color. I took a close look at the stampings and they look sharp and clean, I am no expert and to the right eye the lettering may be dull. Someone had taken the front and rear sight, one of the grip screws and what looks like a part with screw to hold the slide in place, nice way to get parts for your rifle isn't it! The serial number on the receiver is 4619xx with a B stamped below it. If there is any rifle that I have purchased that screams that it to good to be true this one does, I will take some pictures of this rifle and post them when I get a chance, in the mean time I would like a DOB please.

PS: The leter is a B and it has the stright stock, I will have pictures soon.

    It was serialized in February of 1915.

    Your Winchester was made in 1916. The stock is made from gumwood giving it the orange hue. The pistol grip was used starting in 1918 on the " expert " model. Could the letter under the number be an E for expert. My info is from Standard Catalog 0f Firearms 2002.

    Looks like it to me too. Weren't these color case hardened?

    I questioned the condition of the stock compaired to the finish on the rifle the finish being perfect and the stock in good condition not perfect. I looked at some other rifles most were later and they did not have case coloring on the receiver, could be that I just did not fine the same rifle.

    I still would like a value for the rifle as is, I got stuck on another Winchester a few years back and I am into this one right so a low value is not a problem. I like the rifle, I have a few other model slide action rifles and may keep this one. Another question is that the other slide acton rifles I have will not take standard load .22 cartridge, will this rifle shoot standard loads or will I need to shoot light load sub sonic's.

    Hello Emmett,

    Both the stocks and the rest of the rifle have been completely refinished. As such, it has essentially zero collector value, and if it has a decent bore and will shoot good, it is worth about $350 as a "Shooter".

    +1 on the refinish. looks like a decent job from what I can tell from the photos. If the bore is really nice it may bring 400 to 500 retail depending on your market. nice origional ones bringing what they do it is hard to find good shooters that you can afford.

    emmett. i picked one up in a drastickly worse condition a few months back. made a new butt stock, oiled 'er up and presented it to my 8 yr. old grand son. he thinks it's made of platinum, but the orginal sights (front and rear)were hard for him to get onto so i purchased a slightly taller set at a gun show and made the switch. the long and the short of the story is i have a set of orginal factory sights free to you for the asking. otherwise they will sit in a box of parts down in the man room long after i've taken a dirt nap. if your interested call me and give me a mailing address. nice find by the way. 801-755-6111
