rockola m1 carbine

i have just picked up a rockola m1 carbine and it has some numbers on the stock i can not find. on the left side it is a square with a star on the top and #82, on the right side has same square with star and #78. what do they mean, it also has a rack number on the bottom behind the trigger gaurd 2084, do not see the crossed cannons or the maker stamp of the stock. any help would be great thanks

it is a rockola barrel and reciever #4539XXX, i have the book refered to and also took another look at the stock marks

next question then why no import marks

and no import marks none,zilch,nada
there is no amount of pics in the world that will answer the question of why no import marks?

    Those are not US markings and without a photo I just have to take a guess but I'd say it is an Italian FABBRICA ARMI TERNI (FAT) marking. Lots of Carbines were shipped from Italy to the CMP and sold in the past couple of years and yours could well be one of those.

    Unless you know what you are looking at, it's difficult for us to "see" your rifle. For example, if it says Rockola on top of the barrel, then it may not be a Rockola carbine; the "name" will be immediately behind the rear site on the receiver. So, photos are a must for us to be able to help you.

    For those of us who want to know what every little part is, an inexpensive book ---- US M1 Carbines, Wartime Production by Craig Riesch --- is really helpful.

    With the additional information on the markings now provided it is likely the CMP return that I suspected. Firearms returned from client nations to the CMP are not required to be stamped with any importer markings.

    hey thanks for the help, it will be interesting to see how many parts have been changed and how many are rockola, it has the pot belly stock and the bayonet lug on it as well. thanks again matt

    The two numbers you listed are Fat numbers, the rifle is most likley a CMP Italian return or imported so it may be marked with the importers mark. A lot of these rifles are marked on the barrel on top just in front of the receiver with a Fat number also.
