A challenge:
I'm thinking I'd like a .308. I'd like it in a "carbine" style in semi-auto, (but I MIGHT consider a bolt action) light weight, and with a longer bull bbl, 20" min, 24" preferred.
Got to be under a grand, though.

I would say the PTR-91 or FAL are two good options. Research the different mfg's and you should be able to find one in that range.
DPMS also makes an AR style 308 that you can find for under $1000 ( no bull barrel)

Browning BAR (the civilian version, not the full auto). A touch heavy, but one of the most accurate semis I own. 0 -
Your's is a tall order...about the only one that will come close is the BAR Carbine lightweight with the aluminum reciever. But possibly the Benelli R1, or Winchester SXR...for the semi automatics.

I have a Remingtom Model 7 FS, which has a Brown Precision kevlar/fiberglas stock on it from the factory. They only made them 1 or two years, around 1987. I took the sights off it, and bedded the action, and free floated the pencil thin barrel, put on a Leupold VX-II compact 3-9x, and a Uncle Mikes Padded Nylon type sling. With 5 rounds, the whole package weighs 6lb's-2 oz.
I am not for sure, but almost posative, that military style arms like the DPMS, and PTR 91(HK 91 clone) are not an option in your state. The winchester SXR might not come in 308, but I am sure it does in 30-06, and is basically the same rifle as the Benelli R1, and Browning Short/Long Track, for a little less $$0 -

Hey Joe just a side suggestion to go with the bolt action. Most game is a one shot deal and with the current politicos. Possibly a better long run solution. 0 -
How about a Remington 7400? They are lite and accurate. 0 -
I would recomended a Remington 742 in .308. semi-auto. Relatively light weight, very accurate, and also very affordable. Several on auction side:

I bought my.308 Ruger 77 used in 1970. It has never let me down. Check the auction side. Where do you live in NorCal? Jones Fort is in Redding. Marshal always has a lot of guns listed. I am always bidding on something. He does local pick up for us residents. Ed 0 -
