COLT NEW POLICE/POLICE POSITIVE ?

We have a old Colt double action revolver 4 " barrel in 32 caliber. Left side of barrel says COLT NEW POLICE and left frame has Colt Pony pic with COLT'S NEW POLICE around it.. right side of barrel says POLICE POSITIVE. .What do we have exactly ?

    Thats Colt's way of saying .32 S&W Long without giving credit to S&W. http://www.gunblast.com/Cumpston_32Colt.htm

    NOT the same caliber as .32 Colt or Long Colt though.

    From your description it might be a transition model between the New Police and the Police Positive. This would date it to the first decade of the 20th Century. Serial number range if this is what you have, would probably be in the early 50,000?.

    If it's factory original and in at least Very Good condition their might be some collector interest in it. The mixture of markings between New Police and Police Positive is what makes it unique.

    The confusing factor is that Colt Chambered two of their revolvers for what they called the .32 & .38 New Police cartridges. These were the same as the .32 & .38 Smith & Wesson cartridges, but Colt didn't want to put S & W's name on their revolvers.

    Unless the barrel has been changed, it is a transition as rufe-snow posted. I have a couple that have the same markings as yours.
