S&W Model 60 No dash
I have a model 60 no dash and no pinned barrel, with serial number starting with AYN. When did the 60-1 come out? What was the inprovement? Also, I like my older guns to have boxes. Did this one come in the older 2 pieces blue box, or the newer blue/white cardbaord box with the attached flap lid? Thanks.

The model 60 was introduced in 1965, the 60-1 in 1972 with the 3" Sq butt heavy barrel version. An AYN serial number does not jive with a 60 no dash. AYN guns were made much later, around 1988.
That gun would have come in the 2 piece blue box. Your gun also should have a pinned barrel as that feature was not discontinued until 1982, 10 years after the 60-1 came along. Are you sure you dont have a 60-3 ?0 -
That is what is so strange. I have re-checked an it is marked 60 with no dash?? And it does not have a pinned barrel. Do you think it could have been miss marked?? It does not look like it was altered, and for what I paid for it, $325, why would someone mess with it. It is in really fine condition 98%+ so........Really stumped. 0 -
With the AYN serial putting about July 1988, my guess is that the -3 didn't get stamped in the crane. If the 0 is close to the edge that could happen.
Your 60 WAS MADE IN JULY 1988 according to the serial number.

This M60 was made in 1969. Although the model number stamp is in the same position as yours, this gun's lettering is "blockier", which was typical for that era.
I think you have a 1987-1988 gun that was stamped incorrectly. It may even be a returned gun that was reworked & resold by S&W. I think based on the SN, it would be a -2 or -3 gun, & would have come with a 1-piece cardboard box.

Based upon just the serial and the unpinned barrel I'd say that - for some reason - it's simply mismarked.
If you break down the cylinder/ejector rod assembly you'll probably find that the gas ring is on the cylinder rather than the yoke. This was a change that brought about the -1 model designator.0 -

Your gun was manufactured in 1987 or early 1988, (Smith & Wesson did not follow a strict numerical order when assigning Ser.# blocks) before the engeenering change of the -3 came out. To be precise, a factory history letter from S&W would be required.
The S&W M60-1 was used to identify a model variation, the square butt gun with 3" heavy barrels. Likewise, the S&W M60-2 signifies a M60 that is DAO (double action only).
When your gun was made, Smith & Wesson was making the M60 (no-), M60-1, & M60-2 simultanously. Not all M60's had the same features thus not all were marked alike.
The S&W M60-3 signifies an engeenering (design) change that included all M60's made from that point on. The -3 (new yoke retention system) was introduced in 1988, shortly after your gun was made.

So...What we are saying is, that it is NOT mis-marked?? That during the same production years that this one was made in, they also made the 60-1 and the 60-2? I whave check the cylinder and the gas ring is on the ejector rod. So I am still confused, or having a senior moment, which happens quite often. 0 -
