A Winchester Model 64 "carbine"?

Hi, Burt H and others:
I've run across a pre war Winchester Model 64 in what appears to be carbine configuration (what appears to be a 20 inch barrel). My reference books suggest that the carbine variation commands a premium over the standard 24 inch rifle. I've never seen a Model 64 carbine before. Any way to tell if it's legitimate or if it has been faked? Are factory letters available on mid-1930's Winchesters to verify how it was originally made? Sorry, no photos as it's not mine. It's on sale locally. Thanks Jim

    What is the serial number for the gun. A 20 inch barrel was available at a no cost option for the gun according to Renneberg newest book Winchester model 94, a Century of Craftsmanship. What is the caliber? They are not carbines just a 20 inch barreled rifle. The front site ramp base should be 1 3/4 inches long versus the 24 in barrel site base which is 2 3/4 inches long.

    Renneberg included the model 64 in his new book. The information I am giving is from his book in the chapter on the model 64.

    Hello Jim,

    Starting in January 1934, a 20-inch barrel was offered in both the Sporting Rifle and Deer Rifle variations. It did not take long before the shooting public began referring to them as "Carbines", though Winchester never officially did so. Today, collectors refer to the Model 64 as follows;

    1. Sporting Rifle
    2. Deer Rifle
    3. Carbine (Sporting Rifle w/20-inch barrel)
    4. Deluxe Carbine (Deer Rifle w/20-inch barrel)

    Thus far, I have surveyed a total of (370) Model 64s, with (28) of them being Carbines (10.33%), and (21) Deluxe Carbines (7.75%).

    I would appreciate it if you could provide me with the following information for the Carbine you ran across;

    1. Serial number
    2. Caliber
    3. Carbine or Deluxe Carbine?
    4. Is it drilled & tapped for a receiver sight?
    5. Is the upper tang marked, and drilled & tapped for a tang sight?
