Remington 552 S/N

I have a 50+ year old ver & can't find a serial number - just the model & patent #. Is it possible that one this old didn't have a s/n?

  Serial number not required for rifles or shotguns until the 1968 GCA. I have 4 of the Remmy 550-1s, and not one SN between them. They go in my bound volume as NSN.
