1911 barrel measurement

I just received a 9mm barrel for my Colt 1911 38super, that I purchased on the auction side. Add said 5" 9mm barrel for 1911 pistol. Barrel extends 1" past the end of the slide and measures 6" from muzzle to bolt face. Seller says they are measured from end of chamber to end of muzzle. I have never heard of this type of measurement before.

Am I wrong in measuring from bolt face to end of muzzle?

    Seller is full of B.S. Look in the brownell catalog Yes they do make 6inch barrels but they are for EXTENDED slides. not a standard GOVERNMENT model

    Like perry said your seller is full of BS [B)] Unless he is just too dumb to know where you measure the barrel length from. It's like someone that measures a revolver barrel from the frame and not the front of the cylinder.

    The industry standard way to measure semi-automatic pistol barrels is from the muzzle to the rear of the chamber (in this case that would be the barrel hood).

    That's how everyone does it, from the manufacturers of guns, to the barrel makers. If you look in any catalog selling either 1911 guns or spare barrels, that's how they are listed.

    The standard gov't 1911 barrel is 5" long, using that measurement.

    Yes, technically a 5" barrel only has 4.1" (or so) of rifling, but nobody who knows what they are doing measures it that way.

    6" overall length barrel is either for a long-slide gun or to have something funky attached to the end of the barrel (Eg a suppressor, etc).

    If your seller listed a 6" barrel as a 5" that's their mistake, and IMO they should rectify for you.

    I always measure it from the rear of the forcing cone (ie the actual physical length of the barrel), so I guess my revolver barrels are about 0.006" shorter than yours [;)]
