    Looks like cowboy checkering to me, ya know sitting around a campfire with your pocket knife, jug a whisky, making your Winchester look pretty. I'm sure the X-perts will comment more offically though.

    It is a bit better quality than typical "cowboy" or "campfire" checkering, but it most definitely is not factory work.

    A few years ago I decided to try some hand checkering; my very first "practice" gun was an old and cheap H&R single-barrel shotgun. My first try was somewhat similar to his example, though I will insist I did at least a little better: too steep an angle between the crossing lines; overruns to the border. Definitely NOT factory. And I'll agree it isn't as bad as the "cowboy with pocketknife around the campfire"...

    Thanks everyone. I thought it looked a little suspicious too. I was looking for a 53 to add to my colection, but I think I'll have to pass on this one and wait for something more original.

    The low serial number is nice. The checkxering is not.

    Agreed.
    It's a nice rifle but I wouldn't quibble over the aftermarket checkering.
    A checkering pro might be able to improve it since it's there already.
