Aspen M1 carbine?

Recently I was talking with a fellow about M1 carbines and he mentioned a variation I had never heard of. He said it was stamped ASPEN and had the ser. number in front of the rear sight. Supposedly it was assembled from mil. parts on a subcontracted receiver, somewhere in CA, back in the days when a degree of sanity still prevailed there.

I did a google search for ASPEN M1 Carbine and came up empty.

Anyone heard of this or was he blowing smoke?

    Neal is correct; it's "Alpine", not Aspen. Alpine Industries of Azusa, CA, made about 17,000 carbines 1962-65. The receivers are investment cast, but some early ones were supposedly made by welding up scrap demilled GI receivers. There were four different marking placements; the earliest had ALPINE/SN behind the rear sight, the next had ALPINE behind and the SN ahead of the rear sight, the third had ALPINE behind the sight and the SN on the sight flat, and the last had the SN on the front left of the receiver.

    They have no historical nor collector value.

    I have a Alpine carbine. It's a very good shooter. All military parts are in it.
