hey guys, help me out here, i have two local gunshops in town that are both selling springfield m1,s in 308, they both claim to only have one each, and both are unfired. one has a 1499.00 price tag, and the other has 1599.00 on it. since i am looking to buy one, i was wondering about the price. they say all parts are springfield except for the top over barrel, it seems to be a tan color plastic. any ideas on this being a good purchase for a shooter and future collectable?

It's Garand, not Grande. CAI was Century Arms International, an importer. The Garand was surplus that was rebuilt and sold by CAI. I wouldn't even pay half of that price for it as it has no collector value.

that is not a surplus rifle it is one of the ones they put together on a new made casted reciever(pine tree castings) i had 4 of them when they came out worth about 500.. at the most..they were about 450 wholesale at the time..they even sold the bare recivers at the time cause there was a big import of rifle kits

750chopper80...over a "grande" for a lousy Garand? Waste of money for that one. Do some more careful shopping and if you have a "grande" to spend, you can get yourself a real good Garand.

fordsix nailed it; the receiver is cast, but most are way off specifications. Many of the parts are worn out. In my opinion, they are not safe to shoot.

Folks selling them are greatful to find someone willing to give $400. I would not patronize that gun shop.
