    It doesn't look sanded to me.

    It's hard to tell around the tang but it could be some very slight shrinkage. Maybe you could ask for a closeup of that area.

    It does not appear to be sanded to me... just 125+ years worth of normal handling wear.

    Nope, it looks normal to me. Even though it is not quite as proud as the forearm, It does not appear to be recesses. Nice rifle though.
