Palmetto Shot gun
This shot gun belonged to a Great Uncle who passed away about 25 yrs ago. I cannot find any information on this company, or the shot gun. The butt of the gun has a hollowed out section, with a "T" pattern. Is this a smaller division of a larger manufacturer? What is this gun worth? The only incscription is on the metal above the trigger, and it reads, "Palmetto Fire Arms Co. of Philadelphia". Does anyone know how old this gun can be? What is it's worth?

The gun is what is commonly referred to as a "Trade Brand Name" shotgun. That is a shotgun made by a major maker for and sold by a wholesaler or retailer who chose the name to go on the gun. The term "Trade Brand Name" shotgun is applied to those guns made between 1890 and 1940. Guns with the name PALMETTO ARMS CO were made by several makers including Crescent Fire Arms Company of Norwich,CT (1892 to 1931), W.H. Davenport Arms also of Norwich,CT (1878 to 1910), Hopkins & Allen again of Norwich,CT (1868 to 1915 and the J. Stevens Arms & Tool Company of Fitchberg,MA (1915 to 1940). They were made for and sold by the E.K. Tryon Jr. Company of Philadelphia, PA a wholesale sporting goods dealer.
Value? Everyone asks. The value of these old shotguns depends on their condition, the amount of original finish remaining on the metal and wood as well as the mechanical condition. Values can range from a high of about $175 for an example that looks as if it came out of the factory yesterday afternoon to less than $10 for a rusty, rotten incomplete piece of junk that might make a fair tent peg. Most sell in the $50 to $100 price range.0
