scope for contender

I just purchased a 16 inch .223 for my contender frame, and want to add a butt stock, but it just downed on me, I might have trouble
with a scope.
If I shoot it as a pistol, then attach the butt stock in the field,
say for stability on longer shots, then I would have trouble with
the pistol scope....
which, if any, scope(s) would work for both applications, or am I stuck
with either/or?????????
The bbl is actually 16 1/4, so I'm legal either way, so lets not get into that issue.

    Some shooter (especially very long range handgunners) actually use rifle scopes on their handguns. It takes some getting used to getting close enough to use one with much shorter eye relief. Also, one must be careful of the possibility of being hit when the handgun recoils. Such would not likely be an issue with a 223, however.

    Thus, a possible solution would be mounting a rifle scope that could be used in either mode.

    Why limit yourself. Their are many solutions out there red dots green dots. Pistol or rifle scopes. A good start would be to investigate which would fit best on top as far as mountings and build it.

    Use a Red-Dot sight. Eye relief won't be an issue.[^]

    I'm not familiar with the "dot" scopes... but wouldn't the "dot"
    cover up my wolf at long distance?

    Get one with a 3 MOA dot and you'll be fine . He'll be far enough out so when the dot covers him it's time to set it on his back anyway.

    Having the +16 barrel is a great help, but ....

    Reconfiguring from handgun to rifle and back to handgun is a violation of federal law - T/C has no special exemption on this unless the receiver and parts required for legal configuration of a handgun and rifle were purchased as a single "kit" from T/C. I suspect alot of folks ignore this and I don't think ATF has it as a high priority, but it is illegal. Once the firearm is configured as a rifle you're not supposed to reconfigure as a handgun.

    What I did with my 45/70 +16" barrel is this. Using detach Weaver type rings (Leupold PRW) on an MGM steel base I've mounted a Burris 4X rifle scope and using the same style rings use a Weaver 2.5 to 8X handgun scope. Switching out +16" barrel on a handgun or rifle frame is perfectly fine, I just put the barrel on my Contender handgun frame with the Weaver, put it on my separate Contender rifle frame with the Burris. It does change point of impact a bit, so I don't know how well it would work in the field with no sighting in, perhaps Leupold QD post type is available in the Contender. I use them on an HS and there's no change to point of impact.

    Alot of folks shoot the Contender pistol in 223 with a handgun scope that has alot of eye relief, the 223 supposedly doesn't have nough recoil to bop you in the eye. I haven't tried this, it seems to me it does have just enough to hit the forehead, but Leupold and Burris make a few scopes with about a 5" eye relief and that might be enough to allow you to use one scope. Nikon also makes a shotgun scope in 2 to 7X that has tons of eye relief, that might work also.

    I'm going with the legal ruling on rifle/pistol configeration of, bought as a pistol it can be fitted with a 16+ parrel and put a butt stock on it.... then drop the butt stock to shoot my 357 harrett in a 10"..
    If bought as a rifle it has to stay a rifle>

    Understandable, I'm sure this is a common approach. Here is ATF letter (sorry for lousy quality) that answers specific question of T/C bought as a handgun then assembled as a rifle and whether it can then be reassembled as a handgun.
