    I do not have anything on serial 26... yet. Please fill me in on the details of the rifle as you found it. I will call Cody in the morning to see what is in the records.

    Im sorry but I wont have all the details you need. Its an extra long barrel but dont remember the length, The guy who now owns is the owner of a gun store in my town that I frequent (and is my wife's uncle) And hes been going through all sorts of hell trying to find out if this is one of the rifles that's was sent back to browning in there contract with Winchester when they sold the patent to the 1885. but like I say There are so many details here its hard to say. If you can find any information on this gun I would love to put you in contact with the owner who is really searching for some answers.

    Edit okay Bert I took him your Email.........

    If it was one of the Browning payment rifles, it will have "BROWNING BROS, OGDEN, U.T." stamped on the barrel (in very small font) between the Winchester address stamp and the rear sight. The earliest serial I have found that was shipped to John Browning is no. 20.

    Have the owner contact me at Win1885@msn.com

    Here is the information directly from the factory ledger;

    Received Date: 9-9-1885
    Tpye: Rifle
    Caliber: 45-70
    Barrel Shape: Octagon
    Barrel Length: 30" X Heavy
    Trigger: Plain
    Stock: not listed (indicates standard)
    Sights: not listed (indicates standard)
    Butt: not listed (indicates standard)
    Date Shipped: 9-23-1885
    Order#: 314

    I have not found any other Model 1885 rifles on order number 314 (yet). That leads me to believe that it was not shipped to John Browning as a patent payment item.
