Knife Laws Question...

I have a knife I carry when hiking/camping that has almost a seven inch fixed blade.

I carry it in a sheath on my belt.

Is this illegal in Texas?

I know this is a gun website but I read the Texas law and it seems a little vague.

It describes an illegal knife and then goes on to state that you only commit an offense if you take it to a school, school bus, polling place, race track, court or a secured area of an airport.

Are there any LEO's on here that could shed some light on this matter?

    Hello Swamp Gut,

    I can't help you regarding the state regulations for the great state of Texas, sorry.

    I do know that what it is in one state county or even city often times has nothing to do with the next one over.

    Alaska was any size blade you wished to carry. I believe for a pocket knife, (concealed) the sharpened blade was not to exceed four inches, unless it showed, in which case it would be considered the same as an unconcealed fixed blade.

    In Anchorage, if going into Federal government offices it would be wise to leave weapons or sharp-bladed "tools" in one's vehicle!

    Nevada law was similar to Alaska, pocket knife (concealed), not to exceed four inches. If the butt, is observable or visible to others, than it was OK to be longer.

    I know that Clark County and Las Vegas are tighter.

    California enforcement is such that if you one has not committed a crime, nor threatened, nor brandished, they have a very short paring knife, not concealed, and they are anywhere other than their own kitchen ... that individual may well be arrested for carrying a deadly weapon! It is not funny, laughable, nor a joke ... I know of several folks with no ruckus or problems arrested while camping ... because they had paring knives while camping!

    I do know that San Francisco, Los Angeles and tighter, in CA.

    When I was a kid in Texas ... the laws were much like Alaska was when I was last there.

    For these three states, there are telephone access numbers for additional information or clarifications if answers not found online. I am certain that Texas must be on the sharp edge regarding information having to do with firearms and other weapons.
